Connecting. Protecting. Welcoming

In Riesa, Saxony, Feralpi Stahl's new rolling mill was inaugurated last May: an innovative project that provides the Feralpi Group company with a record-breaking facility. Here, Spooler coils (hot-rewound reinforcing steel in coils) are produced that can reach up to 8 tons – a world record.

But what was Defim Orsogril's role in this project? We're getting to that...

One of the initial challenges was to connect the steel plant to the new rolling mill area. To do this, it was necessary to build a 300-meter-long rollerway: a major engineering feat, designed to transfer the still incandescent billets to the new Spooler production facility. It's impossible to miss it when travelling along Gröbae Strasse, which leads to the plant's entrance.

But how do you make a 300-meter rollerway not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing?

This is where Defim Orsogril played its key role. In close collaboration with architect Giuseppe Caruso of Studio Caruso Torricella and the company's technical team, we proposed a cladding solution from our product range. The selected product was "Teti Microforata," a curvilinear design engineered to conform perfectly to the tunnel's contours. This creates sinuous lines that sweep along the side walls, starting from the steelworks and guiding the eye towards the final curve where the structure seamlessly merges with the rolling mill.

Over 5,000 panels were custom-fabricated for this project. The result is more than a simple protective covering for the rollerway; it is a true design statement, planned to make a significant visual impact on employees and visitors alike. This reflects the Feralpi Group's long-standing commitment to creating work environments that are both more welcoming and inspiring.

What makes this structure so special?

The color palette is fundamental to the structure's identity. A carefully chosen sequence of alternating shades—inspired by Feralpi's brand and local history—creates a powerful visual narrative. The deep green of the steelworks gradually brightens to a brilliant blue at the rolling mill, turning a functional pathway into a dynamic visual experience. In this project, aesthetics are not an afterthought but a core component, proving that even heavy industry can break free from outdated stereotypes.

Once again, this ambitious project showcases the vision and drive of the Feralpi Group, a company dedicated not only to product excellence and process innovation, but equally to architectural merit and a welcoming, inclusive culture. The new rolling mill's rollerway is therefore more than a simple conduit for billets: it is a powerful manifesto. It affirms that even within industry, innovation can -  and must - forge an alliance with beauty.
